Do do do do do, Two Classes!*

*Sung to the tune of Two Ladies from Cabaret

Well, I have attended two of my classes for this semester. On Monday night, it was Communication & Technology,

my one actual graduate course that I had to petition to get into. We have a course reader that I picked up from the copy place this evening, and three course books. The three books are:

The Medium is the Massage by Marshall McLuhan
The Question Concerning Technology by Martin Heidegger
Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music by Christoph Cox & Daniel Warner

I am responsible for a creative project, in class discussion, 5-7 readings a week, a research project using a new form of technology that I am not familiar with and we also are suppose to contribute to Wikipedia. And it can just be as easy a contribution as editing someone else’s entry, thank goodness.

The class isn’t quite what I thought it would be and I am very glad that my friend Big D is in the class with me. Also, one of my fellow Graduate students is recording the lectures and will make them available through a podcast, totally doing this of his own volition. And it is very appropriate for a class on Technology and Communication.

At first I wasn’t sure how I was going to stay on topic with my preferred research topic but explore the way in which technology affects a form of communication. But then, right before our break, it struck me. If the Professor will approve my topic, I plan on writing on the use of ‘photoshop’ and other such editing software to diminish and corrupt the presentation of women in media. Meesh had that wonder post about the appearance of women in ads and a link to a website for photo-retouching that I can use and I also had a couple articles from my Women and Media class last semester that talks about erasing women.

Okay, so I am not very coherent on the topic of my paper but it’s there, more or less. I’ll keep you informed as it develops.

Class # 2 Rhetoric of Women

When I first purchased my textbook for this class, I was not excited about it. The text book is:

Governing Codes: Gender, Metaphor, and Political Identity by Anderson and Sheeler

Politics and women – booo-ring!

Well, I have changed my mind. I think that I am going to have a blast in this class. It also has a class reader and a lot of work but it promises to be an interesting experience. We have journal responses due each week to show that we are reading, understanding and synthesizing the readings. We are also doing a group project on one of the five female politicians that we are studying: Ann Richards, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christine Todd Whitman, Elizabeth Dole, and Shirley Chisholm. The group will present in class and then each individual member is responsible for a paper. We are presenting ‘sightings’ (re: current events), and creating a poster for a Global Feminist Activist group, and a research paper on any approved topic as long as it is based on women and their rhetoric. One of the options is to select an ‘artifact from popular culture – I can pick a movie – and we have a comprehensive essay final exam.

We broke out into groups of 3 and tried to find things we have in common (all our group could come up with was we have all been to countries in Europe) and then we had to come up with three statements, 2 true and one lie. We were to tell the others and there were suppose to guess which one was the lie and then we selected one person to stand up and tell their statements to the class and have them guess. I was selected by the group to present my statements to the group. And no one guessed my lie correctly! Me, the one with no poker face. My three statements were:

I have 12 aunts and uncles.
I have a degree in Costume Design.
I won a beauty pageant when I was in high school.

They all thought my second statement was false. Awe, they were all so kind!

Any who, the only one who knew that the last one was false was my friend JW from Texas who is in the class with me. If we are allowed to, we are going to do some joint research on the activist groups from Chiappas (sp?).

We also took a quiz. I was able to match all the women that were listed on the matching portion but I had to guess on the first half of the test, a True or False section. For guessing, I didn’t do too badly. I got one and a half wrong, the half point was for a poorly written question that was both True and False. Test your knowledge below and see how you do. Answers will be in the comments section of this post.

TRUE or FALSE
1. Women in the U.S. were the first in the world to recieve the right to vote.

Winter Break Goals

I had three weeks off of school and although I worked extra hours (30 a week), I still had grand ambitions to get extra stuff done during this time. See below:

Read one book a week.

Okay, I failed miserably at this one. Only read Celluloid Closet and then didn’t pick up another book all break. I did start the introduction for one of my ‘textbooks’ but I don’t count that. Boo.

Catalogue and watch one ‘research’ movie a week.

I consider all the movies I own that have Latina/o subjects ‘research’. I am going to place this one in my win column. I catalogued all my movies and watched a lot of movies, some of them on topic.

Sew 2 pieces a week.

Believe it or not, I started out doing well on this one. Fixed my sister’s curtains, finished shortening the sleeves on T3’s raincoat, fixed jeans, socks and 2 of my winter coats. The last couple of weeks, I dropped the ball.

Cook 1 new vegetarian dish a week.

didn’t get any where close to this one. Although I did act as sou chef for Meesh a couple times this break. The results were mixed, once were not so bueno , through no fault of ours, once was amazing food. I am looking forward to more assisting of cooking as time allows this year.

Tidbits

I've been fairly busy the last couple weeks but here is a quick catch up post. I will try to be as brief as possible.

Went ice-skating. Only my 2nd time ever but didn't fall once.

Went on a lunch date, no spark, I made a new friend at work pretty much.

Finished reading a book that wasn't a class assignment but still has academic merit. Did you see I updated my sidebar on the blog? I do want to write about what I learned from the book but...

Got a new job offer at the union, I will have to write separately about that too.

Over the past two weeks, our house was painted. We now have a taupe house...just like the rest of the neighborhood.

I’ve been having really strange dreams lately, which have nothing to do with me taking Nyquil.

Meesh – I love your CD. One day as I drove home from work, I almost missed my off-ramp because I was having too much fun listening to the CD. Thanks!

Went shopping with mi amiga PB for her cocktail dress for her wedding. We went to a fun store in the Sherman Oaks Galleria called ‘Hepburns’. Makes me wish I had a fancy event to go to and needed a fancy dress.

More to come soon.

Yearly Review

Happy New Year! I know I have been quiet as of late but being sick and starting work on an extended schedule that I am not use to have keep me busy.

I notice a trend among the bloggers I follow closely, which is to list their New Year's resolutions. I don't 'do' resolutions, rather I set one goal for myself to achieve during the year. I look at it as I always have goals of self-improvement but I set one kind of major goal to advance my life and by setting only one, I actually have a snowball's chance in hell to actually complete it. I'll get to sharing my goal for 2007 but first I thought that I would list a few of the major events in my life in the past year. I had a fairly good year and more importantly, I think that I grew a lot this year. It's amazing how much change 12 months can bring. For Me:

I was accepted to Grad school after numerous rejections (I received the acceptance letter on Cinco de Mayo).

I found out I had received a grant for Grad school.

I underwent surgery and corrected my vision.

Went to Guadalajara for a conference. Exciting since that meant I managed to travel out of the country using my passport again.

Switched jobs. Not that the newspaper wasn't exciting but working off campus was really tiring and I love my new job. I have a great boss.

I think that there was more but those are the major events that I can think of. It doesn't seem like a lot, after all it is only 4 sentences but they were fairly major things.

So my yearly goals; I started doing one yearly goal in 2005. Come to think of it, 2005 was a year for big changes as well. Back on topic, 2005's goal was to get my passport. I considered also including getting a stamp in my passport as part of the goal but I didn't want to push my luck on completing my goal. When I got my passport, it was for my trip to Italy and I have stamps from Germany and Philadelphia.

2006's goal was vague. I had a lot on my mind at the beginning of the year and I never set a firm goal. I briefly considered the goals of getting another stamp in my passport, getting an article published or switching jobs. I don't think I actually set a goal but look, I managed to complete 2 out of the 3 goals I considered. And getting published would have been a long shot and I rejected it as an official goal as I thought my first semester in school would be challenging enough (boy was I ever right) with out adding writing a publishable article on top of it. Besides, it would have to have been a completely independent endeavor as the two classes I took in my major were prerequisites and more focused on giving me information for my field than challenging me to create my own hypothesis.

This brings us to 2007. Ideas that I have been tossing around include:

Attending both conferences to the academic associations I belong to. I attended NACCS but missed MALCS in 2006.

Joining both the National Communications Association and the Regional Communications Associations.

Getting another stamp in my passport.

I also thought about what the next step in my path of financial responsibility should be. Considering I have never pulled my credit report perhaps is something I should look into. Or I could aim to not spend over my budget this year. I don’t do it every month, maybe only 5 out of 12 months. Okay, maybe it was 6 months.

Any who….

I also would like to start blogging about stuff I read and social issues instead of using this space as a whining tribute to my life. Course, I make that goal about every three months.

Back to the grind and I will try to keep on top of entries.

Three good books

So, I know we shouldn't judge how good a Christmas we have by the gifts we get but I have to share. We always get at least one book for Christmas from the 'rents. This year I recieved:

Philosophy of Film and Motion Pictures

The New Media Theory Reader

Guess who has a Communication and Technology (read: Media Studies) class next semester? I hope to get these read in January before school starts. I'll let you know what I think if I do.

Confession

Okay, I admit it, I'm a big ol' nerd.

I love to balance my checkbook. I like to enter all the charges I make at least once a week. And once a month, I sit down and balance my checkbook to the penny. I love it, I really love it.

I can tell when my life is out of control when I miss balancing my checkbook for a month. I actually didn't balance my checkbook for two whole months. Oh my life was so out of control!!!

But now, with finals over, I have balanced my checkbook and all is right in the world again.

As my bro would say, "Nerd alert, nerd alert!"

DUN

That's right, D. U. N.

No more finals, no more staying up late to study or work on papers, no more for the semester.

(snort) wha... Sorry fell asleep for a second there.

For all the other school kids, hang in there, the end is in sight.

Sunday afternoon

Dewd, I have a ranging headache. I've taken medicine for it and drank coffee for the caffeine but it is still hanging in there. The good news is that I have written up 11 out of the 12 articles I need for my paper. The bad news is while the paper need to be 12-15 pages long, I am only at 10. That means between writing up the last article and my conclusion, I have to write two pages. It never ends....But I asked for this.

Saturday, December 16, 2006

EEEEeeeeek!

I am freakin' out about the paper I am writing. Normally I do well on papers but this is a literature review, which I have never done before and it is going slowly.

Curses!!!

Digits

Tonight T3 and I went to JI's Birthday party at The Rack. It was good to see her and I actually like to play pool, even though I suck at it.

But the big news is, as some of you may know, I have been crushing on a friend of JI's who use to work at the same place we did for about 2 months now. We would chit chat at work but he quit before I did and left really abruptly. My Crush and I talked on the phone once while I was at JI"s house the night of October's Potluck but I hadn't talked to him since. Well, long story short (too late!), My Crush was suppose to go to the party tonight.

JI told me he was suppose to be there around 9ish and as 9 came and went, I was sad to not see him there. He eventually came in but we didn't make any type of eye contact. Until T3 and I decided it was time to leave. I had left my sweater in the room he was hanging out right by the door in. So I went up to say hello.

My Crush gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek when he saw me. We talked for a little and I introduced him to T3 and mentioned we were getting ready to leave since we were tired. My Crush said it was good to see me and he was glad he got there in time to run into me and that we should hang out together sometime. So I told him he should take my number so we can chat sometime.

I tried so hard to play it cool but still be open and friendly and indicate that I was interested and open to getting to know him better. He forgot his phone so we ended up grabbing one of the little reserved tents, ripping it in half and I gave him my number. My Crush gave me another hug and a kiss on the cheek and T3 and I headed out of there.

I did it!

In some ways, I missed the whole having a crush and dating guys thing so this is a whole new experience for me. Now all that remains to be seen is if he actually calls....

The decision

So it is that time of year again, a time when a very important decision has to be made.

Is it better to limit the amount of sleep one gets and depend on coffee to keep you going in order to get assignments done in a timely manner? Or should one try to get regular amounts of sleep so the papers being written are actually coherent on the first try?

Friday, December 08, 2006

Well lookie here!

I found my

Now I can finally write that paper for Rhetorical Theory. Don't you just love it when something has been missing forever and suddenly you stumble across it one day? Yay!

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

doggoneit

So, after all that

I got a B. Very frustrating. I have not studied so hard for anything in a long time. I thought I would do better.

Sadsies.

Good or weird?

There is a coffeeshop on the first floor of the student union where I work. The bathrooms are right above it, so it always smells like sweet coffee in the women's bathroom.

Is that a good thing or just weird?

Phone message

So I finally bit the bullet and listened to the phone messages that have collected on my phone over the last few days. Because my 'stalker' was message 1.

"So I'm beginning to think you don't love me anymore..."

WHAT?

Because I fell deeply, madly in love with him over the course of one date but just don't know what I want and am denying myself of his company... Seriously, I'm about ready to call him and verbally cut him off at the kneecaps.
