So I don't want to have false hopes but both USC and UC Irvine have asked for additional documents to qualify for financial aid. I don't remember that happening with any schools the last time I applied. I don't want to assume but...

So I checked with my friend who has applied to both these places too. She got the same emails. It looks like it is a standard practice now. Better to know this now than have false hopes.
